iTunes and other online music services are in talks to offer higher quality music downloads
It’s about time! The compression experienced when downloading music from the web, and worse when streaming live, is destroying people’s appreciation for good quality sound and their understanding of what their favourite music was intended to sound like.
There will probably be a premium charge for these 24bit downloads as opposed to the standard 16bit, but at least people with then have the choice. Radiohead's recent album launch offered the choice, charging £9 for a lossless file and only £6 for MP3 format. There's no data yet to see which was most popular but you can be sure anyone with a half decent system will appreciate that extra £3.
The move will be a headache for Apple who's Apple mac can output 24bit files, but iPods and iPhones cannot, a potential new feature for iPhone 5?
Will you pay extra for a lossless files? Add your comment on our Facebook Group or on twitter, search Audio7
